New Delhi:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told New Delhi TV on Friday night that the achievements of the Modi government in the past 10 years mean that the situation on the ground in Arunachal Pradesh is a critical issue for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. “Very beneficial”.

Mr Rijiju, 52, expressed confidence that the BJP would retain both Lok Sabha seats in the state and predicted a resounding victory in the concurrent assembly elections.

“Across the Northeast, the wave is very clear. The achievements of the Modi government in the past 10 years have made the situation very favorable to the BJP and its allies.”

“As far as Arunachal Pradesh is concerned, we are confident of winning both seats with a record margin. People understand the situation on the ground and want to give Modi another chance. Our performance may be better than last time.” … …We are also likely to win resoundingly in the parliamentary elections. We will have an absolute majority. “

“I have been representing this constituency since 2004 and I feel that people’s confidence (in Modi’s government) has only grown since then,” he told New Delhi TV.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won the western and eastern seats in Arunachal Pradesh and subsequently dominated the state polls. It won 41 of the state’s 60 seats, 30 more than in 2014.

Mr Rijiju is the MP from the Arunachal West seat, which he won by a huge margin of nearly 175,000 votes, defeating Nabam Tuki of the Congress party. He also won the seat in 2014, defeating another Congress candidate Takam Sanjoy by more than 40,000 votes.

He has been nominated to defend his seat at this election, where he faces a familiar and experienced opponent in Mr Tuki, a six-time MLA and two-time former chief minister.

Talking about his contest with Union Minister Tuki, he said: “He is definitely a veteran of Arunachal Pradesh politics and has a lot of experience. So, I don’t take it lightly…”

Mr. Rijiju, however, highlighted the “very favorable” situation for the BJP and said Arunachal Pradesh would do its part to ensure that the party and its allies achieve their target of winning over 400 seats.

“The plan (assuming he is elected to a third term) is very simple…contribute to national development. The good news is a lot of infrastructure has been built…so now we will focus on skills development and Youth employment. Arunachal Pradesh is ready to take a giant leap.”

“In eight to nine years, we will be one of the states with the highest per capita income in the country. We have all the resources… Just utilize it and Arunachal Pradesh will become a conducive economic and tourist destination Land,” Mr. Rijiju said.

The state will conduct two polls on April 19. The results of the parliamentary election will be announced on June 4. Results for the 60-member state assembly will be announced two days in advance.
