A key witness who gave key evidence in the Madeleine McCann inquiry has died from cancer, a court has heard.
That could be a setback for investigators who have struggled for years to find enough evidence to charge the main suspect, German drifter Christian B.
He is currently on trial for unrelated sex crimes (three rapes and two sexual assaults), which he denies.
Seven years ago, Christian B’s former friend Helge Busching told Scotland Yard his friend “admitted” Madeleine’s abduction, revealing “when I took her away she Not crying,” which brought police attention to Christian B.

Mr Bussing, a convicted criminal, gave evidence at the trial two days ago and was asked about his role in the case. Madeleine The investigation revealed that British detectives flew in to meet him and spent three days interviewing him.
But on Friday another acquaintance who gave evidence said Mr Bussing had recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer and did not have long to live.
Austrian carpenter Michael Tatschl told the German court: “When we spoke on the phone four days ago, we discussed general matters including his cancer. The situation was very bad. He had only been diagnosed a few months ago. result.”
Mr Bussing, 53, told his sex crimes trial this week how involvement in the Madeleine investigation had affected his life. “I didn’t anticipate the consequences. I lost my job, my apartment, and I had no friends. My life changed negatively,” he said.
In other evidence at the sex crimes trial, Tatchell said Christian B had bragged about breaking into a Portuguese tourist apartment while the holidaymakers were sleeping.
He said Christian B told him he once broke into a home naked when a girl woke up and screamed.
Tachir, 50, said he met the German drifter on Portugal’s Algarve coast 20 years ago and the pair shared an interest in vehicles and both sometimes drove camper vans.
He said they spent time together in prison after being jailed in 2006 for stealing diesel, with Christian B telling him about his lifestyle.

“We were friends and partners in crime,” Mr Tatchell told a court in Braunschweig, Germany, where Christian B was on trial for sex crimes.
Christian B, who cannot be fully identified under privacy laws, denies all sex crimes allegedly committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
Mr Tatzl said that in early 2006 he often stayed at the house Christian B rented in Praia da Luz, a year before Madeleine disappeared from the holiday apartment in the village .

Mr Tatschl said other friends of Christian B told him they had discovered a video at the house which allegedly showed him raping an elderly woman. He himself has not seen the video.
He also told the court he saw sex toys such as whips and handcuffs around the house, as well as Christian B’s secret stash of stolen goods, which included 500 passports.

The hearing was delayed at the outset as the defense requested to see evidence witnesses gave to police during interviews in 2019 during the McCann inquiry. He reportedly denied having anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.
