An Indian nurse, Nimisha Priya, sentenced to death for killing a Yemeni man, met her mother after 11 years when she visited her in prison. Nimisha came running to her mother and hugged her, and both of them broke down.

Nimisha Priya’s mother, Prema Kumari, visited the Sanaa jail on Wednesday (April 24).

Priya is said to have killed the person accidentally while attempting to retrieve her passport, which he had kept in his custody.

After meeting her daughter and spending a few hours with her in Sanaa jail prison, Prema Kumari said in a video message that she wasn’t sure if she would be able to see Priya again, reported news agency PTI.

“The moment she saw me, she came running to me, calling me mummy and hugged me. We both cried,” said Kumari.

Priya, consoling her mother, urged her not to cry and assured her that everything would turn out fine.

“Then she too started crying. We hugged each other and cried. I was seeing her after so many years,” Kumari said.

During their brief reunion, the two shared a meal and spent precious moments together.

Kumari described the strong support from other female inmates, highlighting Priya’s significance in their lives.

“There are women of all ages in the prison, and for them, Nimisha is an essential part of their lives. They all came and hugged and kissed me,” she revealed, reported PTI.

The visit happened because of the Save Nimisha Priya international council. They helped Kumari go to Yemen. The Delhi High Court allowed Kumari to talk to the victim’s family about blood money to save Priya from being executed.

Yemen follows Sharia law which allows for a pardon if the victim’s family accepts “blood money”.

Yemen’s Supreme Court had previously dismissed Priya’s appeal against her death sentence, offering a final chance for clemency through securing a pardon from the victim’s family by paying blood money.

Priya has been convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, who died in July 2017, after she injected him with sedatives in order to get back her passport from his possession.

It was alleged that Priya administered him sedatives, so she could take back her passport while he was unconscious, but he died of an overdose, reported PTI.
