Kate Middleton’s uncle Gary Goldsmith expressed regret for his previous criticism of Meghan Markle, whom he nicknamed the “Smiling Girl” in an interview with the British newspaper The Times.
Gary lashed out at the Duchess of Sussex during an interview with The Times in London last week, but has now apologized after Kate was diagnosed with cancer.
“As many of you will have seen, I appeared in Saturday’s issue of Time Magazine. This interview and photo shoot was done over a week ago, well before I became aware of the sad news about my niece Kate Published,” the 58-year-old “Celebrity Big Brother” alum tweeted via X over the weekend.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Kate and the wider family at this difficult time and am deeply troubled by the timing of this article,” he continued. “I hope this puts an end to the ongoing speculation and horrific intrigue. Let’s give Kate, William and the children some time and give some love back.”
Throughout the interview, Goldsmith called the 39-year-old “Suits” actor “erratic” and “bad for our country.” He also said he didn’t understand Markle’s accusations that members of the royal family made racist comments about the color of her son, Prince Archie’s skin.
“That’s why Meghan’s comments about Kate made me so angry. Me and Carol [Middleton] We grew up in a community as diverse as the Woolies pick’n’mix counter,” Goldsmith explains. “Every culture you can think of. The idea of Laughing Girl calling Kate a racist makes me angry. Kate knows her family’s roots and is proud of them. Sorry, the Smiley Girl is not a nice person. “
The Times noted that the interview was conducted before Middleton, 42, shared a video message in which she revealed that she was in the early stages of preventive chemotherapy.
