Joe Root Revealed he will focus more on his mental approach in the build-up ash Instead of considering changing your technique Australian conditions.
A subplot ahead of England’s bid to clinch the urn is that Root has never scored a century in 14 Test matches in Australia, where he averages a respectable 35.68, with nine fifties and a top score of 89.
Former captain of Australia ricky ponting Root is favored to end his huddling in the five-match series starting this week Perth on November 21 but added that it would be “a mental thing for him more than anything else”.
Root seems to agree with Ponting as he admitted that trying to get his mindset in the best place has been most important in his preparations for quite some time now rather than worrying about technical adjustments.
“The way I prepare now is different from how I prepared 10 years ago,” Root said. “I have played against a lot of their guys, I know how they work, I know what they might try to bring to the series.
“I was very technical in my preparation. I want to make sure everything is organized and my feet are in the right place, my head position is right. But I am very focused mentally.
“Now I’m a bit more concerned about how I’m approaching the game; how I’ll deal with different conditions, whether it’s the surface, whether it’s different types of bowlers, different angles, being able to manage those different angles when they come out of the crease, things like that.
“So it’s just taking a look at the potential structure of their squad, the different threats they could pose and then making it clear how I want to counter them.”

Root captained England on their last Test trip to Australia in 2021–22, which ended in a 4–0 defeat for his team, while he resigned from the post a few months later after losing in the Caribbean.
Since then, Root has scored 14 centuries in 41 Test matches at an average of 58 in the Brendon McCullum era, and he is full of optimism about England’s prospects despite a record of 13 losses in the last 15 matches.
“I am looking at it at the moment and I am in a completely different phase of my career,” Root said. “I am not the captain anymore, I am playing really good cricket, and so we are playing in a really exciting way.
“We have a good group of players, we can go out there and attack them with different equipment than in previous tours, so it’s a really exciting prospect when you look at it that way.”
Root, however, was adamant that his immediate priority is three ODIs against New Zealand, the first of which takes place at Mount Maunganui on Sunday, as England look to improve their weak world ranking.
They are eighth in the International Cricket Council standings, but only the top-eight automatically qualify for the 2027 World Cup, along with co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.
A series win over the world third-ranked Black Caps will go a long way to allaying concerns and England have an almost full-strength squad, although Jofra Archer is not available this weekend.
“I don’t think it’s arrogant to say that if you look at the quality within our team, we are not eighth in the world team,” Root said. “We must compete and fight for that top spot.
“This is the opportunity that is in front of us in this series and in preparation for the next World Cup, can we work our way up to that top?”
