Jockey Stefano Cherchi, 23, who had more than 100 wins in Britain, died from injuries sustained after falling from his horse.

Italians rode in Australia On March 20, his mount Hasime fell during the Affinity Electrical Technologies Plate in Canberra.

He was treated at the track before being taken to hospital, where he was found to have suffered a head injury and internal bleeding.

Racing New South Wales posted on X: “The Church family are deeply saddened to announce that their beloved son Stefano passed away peacefully today.

“The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and messages from the racing community around the world.”

Cerci owes much of his British success to horses trained by his Italian compatriot Marco Botti, who provided his most recent British experience at Chelmsford in November ‘s mount.

Sardinian-born Cerci worked 38 winners with Botti during his time in the UK and the Newmarket agent said the jockey was “like a son” to him.

He said: “This is devastating news for all of us. We know it’s a bad fall, we know things don’t look good, but you live in hope and hope for a miracle.”

“Hopefully he goes to a better place and we will never forget him – he will always be with us.

“His charisma and the way he relates to people, he’s a great guy. He’s kind of like a son to me, honestly.”

Cherchi made his British debut in 2018 and rode his first winner, the Wolverhampton-trained Botti-trained Withoutdestination, in April the following year.

He has also worked with a variety of coaches, including Godolphin coach Saeed Ben Surul and Newmarket coach Amy Murphy.

Cherchi, who won four gold medals for David Loughnane, said on the X: “He was an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to know and work with. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

British Horseracing said in a statement it was “heartbroken” to hear the news and “the entire racing community will be in mourning at the loss of such a talented young man”.

The Professional Jockeys’ Association said Cerci was “extremely popular” and a “talented jockey” and said his thoughts are with “his partner Brittany, his family, friends and colleagues”.
