Venkatesh Iyer was at the center of the action during Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2024 match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. He scored a fighting half-century as KKR scored 169 runs despite some of their batsmen getting out on low scores. KKR’s score was 57/5 immediately after the power-play. But Venkatesh Iyer played a brilliant, controlled innings, scoring 70 runs in 52 balls and sharing an 83-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42).
But then again, he was also involved in a terrible mix-up. This happened on the last ball of the 17th over, Andre Russell was at the other end. Iyer did a reverse sweep against Hardik Pandya and the ball went towards short third man. By then Russell had started running while Iyer was watching the ball a few steps down from the wicket. When he realized Russell was coming, Iyer sent him back but it was too late. Hardik Pandya collected the ball well and broke the stumps.

The run out also sparked online debate over whether Iyer should have sacrificed his wicket. After his dismissal, KKR’s score was 153-7 in 17 overs. After getting out in the last three overs, he could not add much runs.

Venkatesh Iyer played very well today and Russell’s run out is Russell’s fault, not Iyer’s https://t.co/HmKrclPfOz

Later, KKR’s spin twins, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy claimed identical scores of 4-22 in their four overs, reducing Mumbai Indians to 61/4.
Mumbai were soon reduced to 71/6, but Suryakumar Yadav mounted a brave defensive effort and combined with Tim David to take them to 120, before Andre Russell (2-30) and Mitchell Starc took five wickets between them. Ended Mumbai Indians’ fight by sharing.
Starc took three wickets in the 19th over, two of them on consecutive balls, taking his score to 4-33. Mumbai Indians were all out for 145, ensuring a morale-boosting win for KKR against a team that had won 23 out of 32 matches before this encounter.
