JNU student groups remained face to face till late night regarding student union elections.

The university administration has not yet issued any statement on this incident.

New Delhi:

Three students were injured in a clash between members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday night, police said.

Videos shared by student groups show chaos inside the university campus as a group of students attack each other during a general body meeting for the upcoming student union elections.

Last night, an argument broke out between groups at the School of Languages over the selection of election committee members, following which students started fighting with each other.

One video shows a student bleeding from his head as he is carried away from the group, while another shows a man tossing a bicycle at a group of students. A JNU official told news agency PTI that some of them have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after being injured.

Although the university administration has not yet issued any statement on the incident, student groups have blamed each other for the clash. However, the police said that they have not received any complaint in this matter.

Left-affiliated Democratic Students Federation (DSF) and All India Students Association (AISA) alleged that ABVP members disrupted the meeting and used casteist and sexist abuses to intimidate students and scuffle with security guards.

“The VC office must accept this act of vandalism and violence committed by ABVP goons, whose faces are clearly visible and seen in the video being circulated online. These criminals must be punished; They should be booked under relevant sections for carrying out such unprecedented violence.” AISA said in a statement.

The right-wing students’ group blamed Aishe Ghosh, president of the JNU Students’ Union and Students’ Federation of India (SFI), for carrying out “dangerous attacks on students” and also targeting students with disabilities.

ABVP said, “The attack on students of the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies represents a serious violation of the principles of education, tolerance and human decency.”
