Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt has warned that the UK should be “absolutely” concerned about the threat from Islamic State following the terror attack in Moscow.

Asked whether the rest of Europe, including the UK, should be “concerned” about Friday’s events. Mr Hunter Tell Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips: “Absolutely.”

He added: “We are very fortunate as a country in that we have incredibly impressive intelligence agencies that have successfully stopped and thwarted many terrorist threats in recent years.

“But we have to remain vigilant – and, you know, if it’s ISIS, what they do is completely indiscriminate and they are prepared to murder in the most horrific way.”

Asked whether the UK’s threat level was likely to rise, Hunt said it was determined by the government’s “peculiar systems” and said he was unaware of their discussions.

“I know they will look at these types of incidents,” Mr Hunt said, “and then they will look at the intelligence that is being gathered by our own intelligence agencies, MI5 and MI6, GCHQ.

“And, I would say, while we have to be vigilant, they were very successful in thwarting a lot of plots – a lot of things never made it into the public domain.”

The current threat level in the UK is “significant” – the third highest, according to the British Security Service, also known as MI5.

The levels are as follows:

• Low – The likelihood of an attack is low
• Moderate – Attack is possible, but unlikely
• Material – attack is likely to occur
• Critical – An attack is highly likely
• Critical – An attack is very likely to occur in the near future

and Russia Mr Hunt claimed Ukraine may have been involved in Friday’s attack and was asked how much the public should believe those claims.

He told Sky News: “I don’t think we have much confidence in anything the Russian government says.

“We know they are creating a propaganda smokescreen to defend a completely evil invasion of Ukraine.”

He added that he was “sceptical of the Russian government’s rhetoric.”
