The victim was stabbed or slashed during the melee by Hill, who collected the blade from a nearby hedge before entering the nightclub and hid it there.

Michael Riddiough-Allen, 32, the fifth person to be stabbed, suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and died at the scene.

Ridio-Allen, from Liskeard, was an innocent bystander who tried to intervene and disarm Hill, the court heard.

After a six-week trial, Hill was found guilty of murder and found guilty of four counts of wounding with intent.

He was found not guilty of one count of wounding with intent in relation to a sixth person.

Mrs Justice Katz told Hill that Mr Ridio-Allen’s death and the injuries to four others were caused by Hill’s decision to carry a knife that night.

She paid tribute to Mr Riddio-Allen, who stepped in to stop Hill from harming others, describing him as “a man of outstanding character”.

The judge sentenced Hill to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years on four counts including Mr Riddiough-Allen’s murder and Section 18 wounding with intent.
