Banaskantha, Gujarat:
A court in Palampur in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Thursday sentenced former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to 20 years in prison in a 1996 case involving cultivation of drugs to frame a lawyer.
Sanjiv Bhatt is jailed in a custodial death case for wrongly implicating a raja in 1996 when he claimed police found drugs in a hotel room where a lawyer was staying in Palanpur Stanbang’s lawyer was found guilty.
Sanjiv Bhatt was sacked in 2015 as Banaskantha district police chief.
District and Sessions Judge JN Thakkar on Wednesday convicted Bhatt under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Indian Penal Code.
The amount of the penalty was announced Thursday.
