‘He will commit more murders’

Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Agency, said in an interview outside court that DeWitt was “without a doubt one of the most dangerous people I have ever encountered in my career as a police officer”.

“I am absolutely convinced that if he had not been caught he would have gone on to commit more murders,” he said.

Mr Kirby said “justice has been served today”, adding that DeWitt “deserves to be behind bars”.

He added that the defendants had “deceived everyone.”

“He made friends with people and came across as a very compliant, helpful guy, but behind the scenes he was a cool, calculated killer who spent years planning Carol and Stephen Backus A special death.”

He described DeWitt as a “loner” who “spent a lot of time creating false personas, all in an effort to control the Baxter family.”

“His level of cunning is staggering,” Mr. Kirby said.

Asked about a possible motive, Mr Kirby said it was “unclear what was going on in DeWitt’s mind”.

“Certainly he benefited financially from the deaths of the Baxter family and we believe that must have been part of his motivation,” he said.
