Israel calls on US ally not to veto UN Gaza ceasefire resolution

By | Published | No Comments

The United Nations Security Council called on Monday Gaza ceasefire immediately, for the first time since its inception Israel and Hamas war Last October. The United States, Israel’s main ally, abstained from the vote.

After the vote, Israel lashed out at the United States, saying “the United States has abandoned its policy at the United Nations today.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that “just days ago it (the United States) supported a Security Council resolution that linked calls for a ceasefire to the release of hostages. China and Russia vetoed the resolution resolution, in part because they opposed a ceasefire tied to the release of hostages. Yet today, Russia and China joined Algeria and other countries in supporting the new resolution precisely because it had no such link. Unfortunately, the United States did not veto the new resolution , the resolution calls for a ceasefire and is not conditional on the release of hostages.”

Israel called the U.S. abstention from the vote “a clear departure from the U.S.’s consistent position on the Security Council since the beginning of the war.”

“Today’s resolution gives Hamas hope that international pressure will force Israel to accept a ceasefire without releasing our hostages, thereby undermining the war effort and efforts to free the hostages,” Israel said.

Benjamin Netanyahu added that he would not now proceed with plans to send an Israeli delegation to Washington to discuss Israel’s planned military action in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

The White House, meanwhile, denied that the U.S. abstention reflected a change in its policy.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Israel’s decision to withdraw from the meeting was “disappointing.”

“This is disappointing. We are extremely disappointed that they will not come to Washington, D.C., to allow us to have a full dialogue with them about viable alternatives to their field trip to Rafah.”

“Our view has not changed that launching a major ground attack against Rafa would be a major mistake,” Kirby said.

The war in Gaza broke out last October after the Hamas terrorist organization launched an attack on Israel.Israeli retaliatory attacks have claimed the lives of thousands of Gazans, while Displacing millions of people.
