Star India batsman Virat Kohli will play for the first time after January 2024 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ) played in the season opener. His return promises to rewrite the history books and propel him to the top of an untouched record. Kohli was last seen playing in the third T20I between India and Afghanistan in Bengaluru. He has since missed the recently concluded five-match Test series against England.
If Kohli scores six against Chennai on Friday, he will become the first Indian in history to score 12,000 runs in T20 matches. The former India captain has played 376 T20 matches so far and scored 11,994 runs.
The 35-year-old will also get a chance to become India’s first batsman to score a century-fifty in T20 matches and finish third. Chris Gayle (110) and David Warner (109) are higher than him on the list.
Apart from this, Kohli will get a chance to become the second batsman to score 1,000 runs in the IPL against a Chennai-based team. Kohli, who has scored 985 runs in 31 games, needed just 15 runs to achieve this extraordinary feat.
The 35-year-old is also the highest-run player ever in the IPL. In 237 matches and 229 innings, the India talisman batsman scored 7263 runs at an average of 37.24 and a strike rate of 130.02. His best score is 113 points. He has scored 7 centuries in his IPL career, the most by a batsman, and 50 fifties.
Last season, the 35-year-old batsman was the fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 639 runs at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82. His best score is 101*. The 35-year-old hit two hundreds and six fifties but failed to lead the team into the playoffs.
IPL Season 17 will kick off on Friday with defending champions Chennai taking on Bengaluru FC in a southern derby at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
