Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is bound to be in the spotlight as the new season begins on March 22. The Australian star was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 2,475 crore. There is expected to be some drama at the auction as the team looks to win its third title in the history of the T20 league. But while many believe that Starc will come under extra pressure because of his price tag, KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir does not believe that will be the case.
The Knight Riders are still aiming to end their trophy drought. All Gambhir wants is to see Starc do what he has done for Australia over the years.
“I don’t think the price tag will put extra pressure on him. I just hope he can do for KKR what he did for Australia in international cricket,” Gambhir said after arriving in Kolkata for the T20 league .
Gambhir joins KKR after resigning as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants. Gambhir even resigned as a Bhartiya Janta Party politician before the start of the IPL, confirming his priorities.
“I have always mentioned that KKR is not a franchise for me but an emotion. So I am happy to be back,”
Gambill said: “I know there will be expectations and I hope I can deliver on that and make the fans happy.”
Knight Riders won the IPL last time with Gambhir as captain. They have not tasted success in the T20 league since the left-hander left the team in 2017. Although the Knights came close to winning the championship, they performed rather averagely without Gambill as they reached the 2021 tournament finals.
With Gambhir back, the team management is hoping to rekindle the old magic.
