The topic of iOS updates has always been a source of debate, with many claiming that Apple prefers to stick to a familiar formula, offering an experience that is largely similar to its predecessor, with just a few added features.

However, that may soon change, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting in PowerOn’s subscriber-only segment. iOS 18 will succeed the current iOS 17 version and is expected to be a major overhaul. Gurman went on to say that he expects iOS 18 to be the “biggest” software update in iPhone history.

“I’m told that the new operating system is viewed internally as one of the biggest iOS updates in the company’s history — if not the biggest,” Gurman said.

First, the new iOS update is expected to double down on AI-driven generation use cases, with Siri getting a major makeover. In fact, The Information reported earlier that Apple could integrate large language models into Siri, which in turn would allow it to solve advanced tasks.

In addition to major AI-driven features, iOS 18, which is reportedly codenamed “Crystal,” may offer more, including new auto-generated playlists in Apple Music and even eventually RCS messaging.

Yes, RCS has been present on iPhones for a long time, and the Cupertino-based tech giant has announced that iPhones will support RCS in 2024. It is possible that the iOS 18 version brings support for RCS. The same as the iPhone 16 series of phones launching later this year.

That being said, the scope of the update is expected to become more apparent at Apple’s WWDC 2024 event in June. Here, not only will we witness the release of the first developer beta, but Apple will also delve deeper into its features, with a particular focus this year on artificial intelligence.
