'5 days without food': Narayana Murthy recalls hitchhiking in Europe

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy shared a personal story from 50 years ago at a United Nations event, when he was hitchhiking in Europe for several days without any food.

Addressing diplomats, officials, academics, civil society organizations and members of the Indian community at the event, Murthy narrated how he went without eating anything for 120 hours during that period, news agency PTI reported.

“Most of you have not experienced hunger. I have,” Mr Murthy said at an event hosted by India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

“Fifty years ago, while hitchhiking in Europe, I experienced 120 hours of nonstop hunger in a place called Nis, a border town between Bulgaria and what was then Yugoslavia and today’s Serbia. ,”He said.

“Most Indians here and I have received good and highly subsidized education provided by the Indian government. Therefore, as civilized people, we must thank our country for helping the next generation of these helpless, poor children get a good education Education.” added.

The event ‘Food Security Achievements: India’s Towards Sustainable Development Goals’ marks an important milestone in India’s efforts to fight hunger. It celebrated the fourth billionth meal provided by the Akshaya Patra Foundation, an Indian NGO.
