Indianapolis shooting leaves 1 dead, 5 injured: report

A shooting early Sunday in Indianapolis left one person dead and five others, including a police officer, injured, police said.

Indianapolis Police Chief Christopher Bailey said at a news conference that two uniformed Indianapolis Police Department officers were responding to a disturbance in the parking lot around 1:30 a.m. at a bar in the 9400 block of East Washington Street. on the spot.

Bailey said two officers exchanged gunfire with at least one suspect, and one officer was shot in the upper thigh and suffered serious injuries to his shoulder, possibly when he fell after being shot. Bailey said the officer is in stable condition and is expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday.

Other officers arrived and found four other people shot to death in the parking lot. They were both taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Bailey said the victims included two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman.

A short time later, a man was transported to Indianapolis Community East Hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, where he died despite being treated by paramedics. Detectives believe he is involved in the shooting. Bailey said the Marion County Coroner’s Office will release his name after next of kin are notified.

Bailey said a gun was found in the parking lot and investigators did not immediately know what led to the initial disturbance in the parking lot but were interviewing witnesses and reviewing videotape.
