Hari Kumar said, the Anti-Piracy Act, 2022 has strengthened the hands of the Navy and India is among the few countries that have enacted such a law.

Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Wednesday said the Indian Navy is aggressively tackling piracy in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and has increased the deployment of warships in the region.

Speaking to the media at INS Shivaji after the inauguration of the indigenously built CO2 based air conditioning plant in collaboration with IISc Bangalore, he also said that the Anti-Piracy Act has been helpful to the Navy.

Responding to a question, Kumar said, Indian Navy has two operations going on in the IOR and one of them is anti-piracy operation.

“Anti-piracy operations have been going on since 2008 with continuous deployment of swarm vessels to combat piracy. The presence of warships deters pirates. Last year we thought piracy was almost over, but recently an Indian ship and Indian crew was hijacked. The Navy Chief said, we have increased the deployment and now we are pursuing them aggressively.

The Anti-Piracy Act, 2022 has strengthened the hands of the Navy and India is among the few countries that have enacted such a law, he said.

To a question about emphasis on ‘self-reliance’ in defense procurement, Kumar said multi-pronged efforts are underway on the indigenization front.

“I have given a commitment to the national leadership that by 2047, when we aspire to be a developed nation, the Indian Navy will be completely self-reliant. This is the goal we have set for ourselves. We have given this commitment and we are working in this direction. This implies that all our platforms will be largely indigenous,” he said.
