An Indian embassy staffer arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI was remanded in judicial custody till February 7 by a court here on Monday.
The Uttar Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday said Satendra Siwal, a resident of the state’s Hapur district, was arrested in Lucknow after being unable to give satisfactory answers after interrogation. Admitted his crime.
Siwal has been serving as IBSA (Indian Security Assistant) at the Embassy of India in Moscow since 2021.
An FIR was lodged against Siwal at the ATS police station in Gomtinagar on February 3 under Section 121A (waging war against the state) of the IPC and Sections 3,5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act.
The accused was produced before the court of Additional Sessions Judge VS Tripathi, who had sent him to judicial custody earlier in the day.
The ATS asked police to detain Sibal, and a judge ordered the man to appear in court for a hearing on Tuesday.
The ATS accused Sibal of providing confidential information on strategic activities of the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of External Affairs and Indian military agencies to the ISI for money.
