'India is up against a rogue': Top bureaucrat on LAC situation

Referring to the situation arising out of China’s military assertiveness along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane on Wednesday said India stands with great “determination” against a “bully”.

His comments came while answering a question during an interactive session at the Indus-X summit.

Mr Aramane said India and the US can play an important role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific, promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

“The possibility that we may face a situation similar to the one we faced in 2020 is what keeps us active at all times,” he said.

Aramane was asked about the challenges faced by India along the LAC and New Delhi’s expectations from Washington to deal with common challenges.

He said, “One thing that helped us very quickly is the intelligence, the situational awareness, which the American equipment and the American government helped us with. So that is one of the most important areas…”

The Defense Secretary said that this determination that both India and the US support each other in confronting a common threat is of vital importance.

“India is giving one-on-one action to its neighbor on almost all fronts, wherever there is a mountain pass, we are deployed there… and wherever there is a road, we have to be there. So in this way we are very determined against a bad guy there. Standing with determination,” he said.

Mr. Aramane said that India hopes that friends like America will be allies.

“We hope that our friends in the United States will be with us if we need their support,” he said.

He said, “We greatly appreciate the support and determination of our friends to support us during such an event, basically any support through information, intelligence and equipment would be very useful to us.”

A standoff continues between Indian and Chinese troops at some friction points in eastern Ladakh even as both sides completed withdrawal of troops from several areas after extensive diplomatic and military talks.

In his address at the summit, Mr. Aramane emphasized that India and the US are key stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific bound by shared values ​​and common interests.

Aramane said, “Today, we are witnessing a critical moment in the history of the Indo-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific, with its vast expanse of oceans and strategic waterways, stands as the intersection of global commerce, geopolitics and security. Is.” ,

“In dealing with the complex dynamics of the region, India and the US find ourselves as key stakeholders bound by shared values ​​and common interests,” he said.

Noting that the strong defense partnership between the two countries is rooted in mutual respect and strategic convergence, Aramane also cited the launch of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) as an important measure to strengthen relations.

“An important aspect of our growing relationship is iCET which aims to establish ‘innovation bridges’ across key sectors,” he said.

On bilateral partnership in the aerospace and defense sectors, Aramane said, “Our bilateral relationship is flourishing, with India increasingly turning to the US for cutting-edge equipment and technology.
