The Uniform Civil Code Bill, passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, has become law and has received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu.
Uttarakhand was the first state in the country to adopt UCC after independence.

A notification published by the Uttarakhand government in the gazette said that the President approved the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code, 2024, on March 11 under Article 201 of the Constitution of India.
“With the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state while providing equal rights to all citizens, the oppression of women will also be curbed,” Mr Dhami said.
“#UniformCivilCode will demonstrate the importance of social equality and play an important role in promoting harmony,” he said.
The state government is determined to protect the interests of citizens and maintain the fundamental identity of Uttarakhand in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added.
BJP president Mahendra Bhatt also expressed happiness over the President’s approval of UCC.
“This will give equal rights to all citizens,” he said.
Uttarakhand BJP media in-charge Manveer Chauhan said this is the fulfillment of a big promise made by the party to the people of the state ahead of the 2022 state assembly elections.
