No party wins clear majority in Pakistan elections

New Delhi:

Pakistan’s elections failed to produce a clear winner, leaving the military’s favored parties to form a coalition government to govern. The country faces days of political haggling after a strong showing by independent candidates loyal to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan dashed the army-backed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) chances of winning a governing majority.

Whoever becomes Prime Minister, India will still have to deal with a problematic neighbor that provides sanctuary to terrorists. Let’s see how Pakistan’s leader, who is running for the prime ministership, will handle relations with India.

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif expressed keen interest in improving relations with India. His party manifesto promised to send a “message of peace” to India, but only if India revokes Jammu and Kashmir’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 of the constitution.

Mr Sharif, who recently returned from exile, recognized India’s progress and global achievements and advocated for the two countries to resume diplomatic ties. The PML-N secured 71 seats, with 13 of the 266 seats in the National Assembly still to be declared as of 3:15 pm on Saturday.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, 35, a scion of the Bhutto dynasty and leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), entered the election with a rich political legacy. As the son of Benazir Bhutto, he inherited a family history filled with tragedy and power struggles.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s stance towards India was multifaceted. While advocating for the normalization of relations between the two countries, he also made widely criticized remarks about US Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 to “give peace a chance” and expressed readiness to act in light of the incident that led to the death of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Action was taken on intelligence of the Pulwama attack) personnel.

In 2021, Imran Khan welcomed the ceasefire agreement, stressing Islamabad’s willingness to resolve issues through dialogue. However, in June 2023, he highlighted the lack of progress in exchange relations with India.

Imran Khan’s People’s Party (PTI) defied a months-long crackdown that has crippled the campaign and forced candidates to contest as independents, with its overall performance still weighing on the competition. Opponents pose a challenge.

The military occupies an important place in Pakistan’s political landscape, with generals ruling the country for nearly half of its history since partition from India in 1947.
