Guwahati:

IIT Guwahati has successfully transferred the technology to produce the country’s first recombinant vaccine against swine fever to biotech company Bio-Med.

The highly contagious swine fever threatens pigs across the country, especially in the Northeast and the states of Bihar, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat.

IIT Guwahati developed the vaccine in collaboration with Assam Agricultural University, a press release said.

“The vaccine uses innovative reverse genetics, utilizing Newcastle disease virus as a vector for key proteins of the swine fever virus,” it added. “This approach ensures rapid and cost-effective development of immunity.”

It added that the technology transfer to BioMed is a milestone in India’s fight against the disease, which currently lacks a vaccine.
