What is a scam?

According to the advisory, a new type of scam is emerging that sends malicious APK links to citizens urging them to download them. Once installed and registered, the APK starts sending all messages received on the victim’s phone, including OTPs.

The bank said: “Be vigilant and ensure that you do not install any suspicious/malicious applications in your mobile phone from untrusted sources. ICICI Bank will never send any SMS/WhatsApp message to customers asking them to call a specific mobile number or Download any app.”

If citizens receive such a message, we urge them to report it immediately to the National Cyber ​​Crime Portal. The bank also released a list of best security practices that citizens can follow to avoid similar scams.

How to protect against scams

1. Update your phone with the latest updates and install the latest security patches.

2. Only install apps from reliable sources such as Google Play Store and App Store.

3. Install antivirus software from a trusted provider and keep it updated.
