Kolkata:
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dismissed suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh’s anticipatory bail plea in connection with the Enforcement Directorate’s probe into an alleged ration distribution scam.
The education department has arrested former West Bengal minister Jyoti Priya Mallick, who served as food and supplies minister from 2011 to 2021, in this case.
A division bench presided over by Justice Debangsu Basak rejected Sheikh’s anticipatory bail prayer after hearing arguments from Sheikh’s lawyer and the ED, which opposed the petition.
Sheikh is currently in the custody of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after an ED team was attacked by a mob on January 5 while searching his residence in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
He was arrested by the state police on February 29, a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered that he could be arrested by the CBI, ED or West Bengal police.
Following a high court order, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into cases related to mob attacks.
