A 70-year-old woman who stabbed her husband in the back and then watched him die has been found guilty of murder.

Prosecutors say Christine Rawle stabbed 72-year-old Ian Rawle after an argument at their remote bungalow. Devon August 2022.

Prosecutors said she plunged the knife into Rolle’s back as he pushed a wheelbarrow and then walked away as Rolle begged her to pull the knife out.

He allegedly followed her for about 100 meters before collapsing to the ground with the weapon still lodged in his body.

A forensic psychiatrist previously told Exeter Crown Court that Mrs Rolle, a horse trainer, was clinically depressed and suffered from a personality disorder at the time.

The jury also heard allegations that Mr Rolle was an abusive and controlling husband.

In video released by Devon and Cornwall Police of Mrs Rolle’s arrest, she can be heard saying: “He’s so cruel” from the back of a police car.

She continued: “How can you love someone. How can you do everything for someone and they hate you so much.”

Later in the video, Mrs Rolle can be heard saying: “He’s going to come get me and he’s going to kill me.”

Prosecutors compared the couple to the bickering characters in Roald Dahl’s “Idiots” and said they often slapped and pushed each other.

Barrister Sean Brunton KC said police had visited the couple several times over the years and it was alleged Ms Rolle had previously stabbed her husband twice, once with a knife and the other with a fork.

An eyewitness said Mrs Rolle would brag about putting Viagra in her husband’s tea or paprika in his underpants and would occasionally wipe her bottom with his tie, either out of spite or as a joke.

The murder is said to have occurred “in a fit of rage” following a dispute over the sale of a plot of land at the couple’s £800,000 home near Braunton.

Mrs Rolle gave no evidence during the trial but her legal team insisted she acted in self-defence.
