Even though the tax department is taking steps to curb tax evasion, according to government sources, the government is worried about huge losses due to compromised investigations in GST cases and is aware of cases where investigations have been compromised in exchange for money.
Sources said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may investigate the officials who were involved in the deal.
According to sources, traders and businessmen trying to save tax have registered many shell companies and these companies have dummy directors who are paid on commission basis or kept on salary.
He said that such cases have come to light where GST investigations were compromised and cases were closed by taking bribes.
According to sources, “The government is planning to take major action against the officers involved in these investigations.”
As per the latest data available, the gross GST collection in December 2023 stood at Rs 1,64,882 crore. With this, the average monthly gross GST collection in the first nine month period of this year stood at Rs 1.66 lakh crore, showing a growth of 12 per cent compared to the average of Rs 1.49 lakh crore recorded in the same period of FY23.
