A man who stole a car while the owner’s blind, dementia-stricken mother was inside has been jailed for more than eight years.
In early January, David Stephenson robbed the 89-year-old’s daughter of her car as she went shopping.
She kept the engine running so the heater could keep her elderly mother warm.
greater manchester Police have released a recording of a 999 call made by a woman who broke down in tears after discovering her vehicle had been taken away from her mother.
She was heard saying: “My car went away with my mum, my mum was in the car… they took my car and my mum.
“She is disabled, blind and has dementia.
“What are they going to do with her, what are they going to do with my mom?”
Police also provided footage of a police pursuit in which Stephenson speeded through the busy streets of Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, overtaking cars and driving on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to evade the law.
He eventually gave up the pursuit and put his hands out the window to surrender to police.
Stephenson was taken into custody and the elderly kidnapping victim was safely reunited with her daughter.

Chief Inspector Matt Jackson said: “This must have been very scary for the woman who was in the passenger seat when her car was stolen.
“She’s blind, she has dementia, she doesn’t know what’s going on – I can’t even imagine what’s going on in her head.”
He added: “I am proud of my officers whose quick thinking and ability to remain calm in any given situation meant we were able to stop the vehicle safely and arrest Stephenson quickly.
“Their response means this woman has been safely reunited with her daughter and if we had not worked hard to get her back safely the outcome could have been very different.”
Stephenson, 51, of no fixed abode, was jailed this week for eight years and six months for kidnapping, motor vehicle theft, dangerous driving and driving without a license.
