A London fertility clinic has had its license revoked over “significant concerns” following the “tragic loss of an embryo”.

The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) said it had suspended the Homerton Fertility Center’s license because of “potential risks to patients, gametes and embryos” if action was not taken.

The local NHS Foundation Trust said staff at the center were “currently investigating issues related to embryo storage”.

Its statement continued: “Three separate incidents occurred within the unit, highlighting errors made in a small number of freezing processes.

“This results in the tragic loss of a small number of embryos that either do not survive or are completely undetectable.”

Patients affected by embryo loss have been informed.

It added that external clinical experts were investigating the incidents but no “direct cause” had been found.

Before the license was revoked, the clinic – which is part of Homerton University Hospital – made a number of changes, including ordering all staff to work in pairs so they could scrutinize all clinical activities.

Security measures at the center have been increased and the trust also said it had “rechecked” staff capabilities.

The trust’s chief executive said patients who currently wish to continue treatment at the center can do so.

Louise Ashley added: “Our incredibly dedicated staff are passionate about supporting patients in any way they can.

“Please accept my sincere apologies for the pain this may have caused.”

The trust has set up a helpline to answer any concerns patients may have.

Metropolitan police attended the clinic on Friday after concerns were raised.

A police spokesman told Sky News that no investigation has yet been launched.
