Earlier this year, Google added its native artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to the Android operating system as an on-device voice assistant. This feature gives users the option to replace Google Assistant with Gemini as the default assistant on their smartphones. However, there are certain drawbacks to using an AI chatbot, as it cannot set alarms, add reminders, or launch apps like its counterpart. A new report finds that the tech giant may soon add the ability to play music with simple voice commands.

PiunikaWeb discovered this new feature in the settings options of the Gemini app for Android Report (Debugging via assembly).According to the screenshot shared, a new option is seen there Gemini setting.The second option at the bottom now has a music option, which is described as “Select your preferred service for playing music.” Another screenshot shows that within that option, another title says “Select your default media provider.”

Judging from the screenshot, the second settings page is currently empty. The report does not mention whether the new setting was discovered in the latest version of the app or a test version of the code, but highlights that the feature is currently unavailable. The feature doesn’t reveal any third-party apps that can connect with Gemini Assistant. However, the report adds that the feature may be rolled out in a future update.

It’s unclear how the feature will work, but referring to Google Assistant, it should be able to play music from Spotify or YouTube Music based on voice commands. Gemini can also offer song recognition, where users ask the AI ​​to listen to music playing somewhere or being hummed by someone in order to recognize its name and play it through the music streaming app. However, it’s unlikely to have any playlist creation features.

Earlier this year, a report highlighted that Google was working on adding Gemini to headphones powered by Google Assistant. This will allow wearable devices to use Gemini as a voice assistant and connect with smartphones running artificial intelligence chatbots as assistants. Currently, despite Gemini being installed on smartphones, these devices still use Google Assistant when prompted.
