Google is ready to deal with the ongoing fraud problem among Android users. The company has begun enhancing fraud protection with Google Play Protect, which promises to protect Android users from financial fraud attacks.
Google will work with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) to launch this feature in Singapore in the coming weeks.
According to the company, when a user attempts to sideload a source from the internet (web browser, messaging app, or file manager).
“This enhancement will check the permissions an application declares in real time and specifically look for four runtime permission requests: RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, BIND_Notifications, and Accessibility,” the company said.
These permissions are often abused by scammers, intercepting one-time passwords via text messages or notifications, and monitoring screen content.
Google’s analysis of major fraudulent malware families that exploit these sensitive runtime permissions found that more than 95% of installations come from Internet sideloading sources.
It is critical that Google finds a solution to this significant threat of financial fraud. Indians complain about these scams every other day and the company is clearly not doing enough to stop such attacks. The company could have considered India as one of the main countries to pilot test this new feature, but this is likely to happen in the coming months.
