Search results on Google and other platforms have become useless and most people are not getting what they want from these search engines. Well, that’s what a new report says about the state of search engines and it appears that they have been polluted with tons of data that is becoming difficult to analyze due to SEO spam.

The details of the study conducted by various institutions paint a worrying picture and the current level of search results, be it product reviews or general questions that millions of people raise daily on these platforms. The study looked at Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo over 12 months and tested it by searching over 7,000 product queries and looking at the results they received.

One of the main topics for this study was product reviews, which seem to have been crowded out by affiliate marketing which involves pushing a brand or product above organic content. It was also highlighted that ranking algorithms for websites were lacking or not working effectively which could have helped combat the threat of spam.

There are certainly concerns about the proliferation and reach of such content, and upcoming AI-generated content may share some space with these results in search. With the massive takeover of AI in the SEO field, Google and other search engines will have to tighten their belts and rework the ranking algorithms to avoid a possible carnage in the near future.

The study is making it clear that the consequences will probably be worse, but it is not all doom and gloom, only if these companies rise to the occasion and respond appropriately to these spam threats.
