California:
Alphabet’s Google is cutting an undisclosed number of employees, a spokesman said on Wednesday, the latest cut at the tech giant as it tries to control costs.
A Google spokesperson said the layoffs were not company-wide and affected employees would be able to apply for internal positions, but did not specify how many employees were affected or which teams were involved.
A small number of affected positions will be moved to centers where the company is investing, including India, Chicago, Atlanta and Dublin.
The layoffs follow a series of layoffs this year at Google and across the technology and media industries, fueling concerns that layoffs may continue as companies deal with economic uncertainty.
“Between the second half of 2023 and into 2024, many of our teams are making changes to become more efficient, work better, eliminate layers and realign resources to our most important product priorities,” the spokesperson added.
Employees on multiple teams across Google’s real estate and finance departments were affected, Business Insider reported on Wednesday. Affected finance teams include Google’s finance, business services and cash-earning businesses.
According to Business Insider, Google finance chief Ruth Porat sent an email to employees saying the restructuring includes expanding growth to Bangalore, Mexico City and Dublin.
Google laid off hundreds of employees across teams in January, including engineering, hardware and assistant teams, as the company ramped up investment and built out its artificial intelligence products.
CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly told employees at the beginning of the year that more layoffs were expected.
