Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of 550 Amrit Bharat stations on February 26 to improve facilities at railway stations by developing rooftop plazas and city centers at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of about 1,500 road overbridges and underbridges in various states during a function, which will be held virtually at over 2,000 railway stations, officials said today.
The Prime Minister will attend the ceremony through video conferencing.
Awards will also be given to around 50,000 school students who participated in speech, essay and poetry writing competitions on the theme “2047 – Railways of Developed India” organized by Indian Railways in 4,000 schools.
Around four lakh students participated in various competitions and around 50,000 prizes will be awarded by Divisional Railway Managers and senior railway officials during the function.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme was launched for the development of stations on Indian Railways.
This includes preparation of master plans for improving amenities at stations through schemes such as station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts/escalators as required, sanitation, free WiFi, kiosks for local products and their implementation in phases. . ‘One station, one product’, in the form of improved passenger information system.
The plan also includes creation of executive lounges, designated spaces for business meetings and landscaping keeping in mind the requirement at each station.
This includes improvement of buildings, integrating stations with both sides of the cities, multimodal integration, facilities for persons with disabilities, provision for ballastless tracks, ‘rooftop plazas’ as per requirement, phasing and feasibility and creation of city center at the station. The plan envisages a gradual shift towards sustainable and environment-friendly solutions as per the availability of funds and the condition of existing assets.
To ensure easy accessibility, it also proposes widening of roads, removal of unwanted structures, properly designed signage, dedicated pedestrian paths, well-planned parking areas and better lighting.
The scheme envisages high level platforms (760-840 mm) at all categories of stations. According to the plan, the length of the platform will generally be 600 meters.
So far, 1,318 stations have been selected under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme based on proposals received from zonal railways and stations located in major cities and towns.
