Former Australian cricket team captain Michael Clarke has criticized England batsman Ben Duckett for his comments about young Indian player Yashasvi Jaiswal. After Jaiswal’s double century in India’s win over England in the third Test in Rajkot, Duckett commented that England’s buzzball approach had encouraged other cricketers from other teams to play aggressive cricket. Clarke was not pleased with the comment and during a discussion on ESPN Australia’s Around the Wicket, he recalled Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting saying that their aggressive style of batting predated the buzzball.

“He would have missed Australia by 20 years,” Clarke said. “As a young player, he wouldn’t have known what Test cricket Australia had played. Has he heard of Matthew Hayden, Michael Slater, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist? These people also thought it was as good as everyone else.”

“Just because you play reverse sweep or switch hit or ramp shot, it doesn’t mean you are batting aggressively. Matthew Hayden walked towards the wicket and hit a six straight over your head. They didn’t have to play ramps or switch hits,” he said.

Earlier, Duckett’s statement was heavily criticized by former cricketers.

“He looks like a rising superstar, unfortunately he’s in very good form at the moment,” Duckett said.

“When you see opposition players playing like this, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they are playing different to the way other people play Test cricket. We saw it to some extent over the summer and it’s exciting to see other players and other teams playing that attacking style of cricket.”
