Shanghai:
German Chancellor Olaf Schulz assured Chinese students in Shanghai on Monday that they would not have to smoke marijuana if they studied in Germany, which has legalized the drug in the hope that cannabis consumption will fall.
Scholz made the remarks in response to a question from a student at Tongji University. The student asked if he would have to smoke marijuana if he studied in Germany, since the drug is not legal in China.
Germany passed cannabis legalization legislation in February, allowing individuals and associations to grow and possess limited amounts of cannabis.
“We don’t want more people consuming marijuana, we want less people consuming marijuana, and we want more public education,” Scholz said.
“The answer is simple: don’t smoke. I’m going to be 66 and I’ve never smoked marijuana.”
The German chancellor, who is visiting China and will meet leaders in Beijing on Tuesday, said Germany wanted to take cannabis “out of the gray area.”
According to data from the Ministry of Health, approximately 4 million people smoked cannabis in Germany in 2022.
