George Osborne hints Rachel Reeves is ‘David Cameron’s heir apparent’

George Osborne has suggested Rachel Reeves is “the heir apparent to David Cameron and himself” as he predicts Labor will win the next election.

The shadow chancellor spoke about another former Conservative leader, Margaret Thatcher, in a major speech on the economy last week.

The former chancellor once described current foreign secretary Lord Cameron as “Blair’s heir apparent”.

At the time, he said, “Tory rejects were shocked”.

However, he added in his diary bystander Magazine, “Moving on from a losing battle is the key to future success.”

In government, he said, he and Lord Cameron “accepted part of Blair’s legacy – social liberalism, the minimum wage and so on – just as Blair before him accepted the trade union laws and market economy inherited by Mrs Thatcher “.

He said the same pattern could now be seen with the current shadow chancellor.

“Now Reeves says she wants to strengthen the Office for Budget Responsibility that I set up, adopt tough fiscal rules and there will be no corporation tax,” he noted, asking: “Is she the Cameron/Osborne heir apparent? ?”

Elsewhere, Mr Osborne, once widely considered the favorite to replace Lord Cameron as prime minister, predicted Labor would “win” the upcoming general election.

Previously, one pollster gave Labor a 99% chance of finishing in 10th place. Sir John Curtis said the Tories had little chance of overturning their poor poll numbers in a blow, adding: “Labour will be in a better position than the Conservatives to negotiate a minority government. We are in a good position because, except perhaps from the DUP, the Conservatives have no friends in the House of Commons.”

Labor has been leading the polls by 20 points.

Rishi Sunak has ruled out a general election on May 2, but the prime minister still faces a potential electoral blow when voters go to the polls in local elections.

The Prime Minister is also facing turnover within the party after two cabinet ministers resigned ahead of the general election.

A total of 63 Conservative MPs, including former Prime Minister Theresa May, have now publicly stated that they will not stand for election next time.

A Labor source dismissed claims of a “Cameron heir” as “rubbish”. They added: “This claim is about as credible as Osborne’s candidacy for David Cameron as Labor foreign secretary. It is because of the OBR that we know the damage five Conservative prime ministers have done to the economy.”
