Last week police raided a funeral home in Hull and removed 35 bodies and found suspected human ashes.
In an update on Tuesday afternoon, Humberside Police Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall and Assistant Chief Constable Tom McLaughlin said they were conducting a “long” and “complex” investigation and were conducting an “extensive investigation” .
They said they have received 1,000 calls related to the case.
Two people – a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman – has been arrested Alleged obstruction of lawful and dignified burial, fraud by misrepresentation and fraud by abuse of position. They have since been released on conditional bail and inquiries continue.
The 35 bodies were discovered between Friday morning and Saturday night and were “respectfully transported” from one of three branches of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors to Hull’s mortuary for formal identification procedures .
Efforts are underway to recover suspected human ashes and searches of “various business premises associated with the detained suspect” are being carried out.
Humberside Police said 120 officers were working on the case, indicating the “scale of the investigation”.
McLaughlin added that the investigation was at a “critical juncture.”
