Frankfurt came from a goal down to draw 1-1 in a tight match at home to Werder Bremen on Saturday, with both sides trailing by a man. Eintracht got the better of things in the first half, with Egypt forward Omar Mamouche twice forcing desperate saves from Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zeitler. The home side survived a handball penalty early in the second period, with VAR ruling that Milos Veljkovic should not have been punished despite contact with his arm. Frankfurt’s execution was short-lived and after 62 minutes, home team goalkeeper Kevin Trapp blocked a free kick and Veljkovic saved it to score.

Werder Bremen looked set for their first win since mid-February until Jens Stage received a straight red card after 73 minutes for a brutal challenge on Jean-Matteo Bahoya. Next, the number of participants in the Bremen team was reduced to 10 people.

The home side equalized just four minutes later when Tuta expertly headed the ball past the helpless Zeitler.

It was all smooth sailing for the home side but hopes of victory were dashed in the final minute of normal time when Tuta emulated a rough challenge from the stage that saw red after driving his studs into Felix Agu’s heel.

The draw means Eintracht Frankfurt remain firmly in sixth place and on track to qualify for European football, but midfielder Mario Gotze told DAZN he is disappointed.

“It doesn’t help anyone. We really wanted three points and conceded that nasty goal.

“We have to do our job.”

Trapp agreed, saying the outcome was “difficult to grasp.”

“We’re still in sixth place but it feels like there’s a negative cloud hanging over us.

“We could have taken a big step towards Europe, so that’s hard to accept.”

Werder Bremen finished tenth, but could drop as low as 13th if this weekend’s results go against them.

Xavi Alonso’s league leaders Bayer Leverkusen play Union Berlin on Saturday, while second-placed Bayern Munich travel to Heidenheim.

Leverkusen leads the table by 13 points and has yet to lose a single match in any competition this season, with 36 wins and four draws in 40 games.
