Former President Donald Trump’s former trade adviser Peter Navarro began serving a four-month sentence in federal prison on Tuesday for being in contempt of Congress.

According to the BBC, Navarro failed to comply with a subpoena (written order to testify) regarding the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

This is the first time during the Trump administration that someone has been jailed for contempt of Congress.

Navarro, 74, is being held in a federal prison in Miami.

he is Convicted last year of defying congressional subpoenas From the House committee investigating the 2021 Capitol attack.

The 12-member jury found Navarro guilty of two counts of contempt of court after Navarro refused to testify or turn over documents to the Democratic-led House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, incident in which Trump supported riots by protesters, and a broader attempt by Republican Trump to reverse the situation. His 2020 election failed.

Navarro meets with reporters before jail

He spoke to reporters in a shopping mall parking lot before heading to a federal prison in Miami.

Navarro also discussed his upcoming book, saying federal judges are unfair because they favor one political camp or another and strongly support Republican presidential candidate Trump.

According to the BBC, Navarro said he believed the Supreme Court would overturn his conviction, but the “tragedy” was that “I have served my sentence in prison.”

Navarro’s role goes beyond trade adviser

Navarro is not just a trade consultant; He also worked hard to try to change the outcome of the 2020 election so that Trump could remain in power.

People heading to Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021 wanted to stop lawmakers from saying Trump lost the election.

Navarro was told to provide emails and documents to Congress in February 2022, but he failed to do so. He said Trump told him not to do it because it was executive privilege, a rule that allows some White House talks to remain confidential.

The judge in the case said executive privilege does not protect Navarro from the subpoena.

Navarro was sentenced in late January and must pay $9,500.

His lawyers said he should not go to jail while he appeals, but Supreme Court President John Roberts Jr. refused to delay the sentence.

Navarro wrote a book saying he helped plan challenges to the election results. But officials said there was no evidence of cheating.

Another Trump-era official, former campaign strategist Steve Bannon, is also in trouble for two counts of contempt of court for resisting a committee subpoena.

He was also sentenced to four months in prison.

However, Bannon was allowed to be released from prison while his defense team appealed, the BBC reported.
