Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan's sister summoned over 'anti-national' speech charges: report

Aleema was notified at her residence in Lahore.

Islamabad:

Aleema Khan, sister of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for making “anti-national” remarks, the Express Tribune reported.

The FIA has launched an investigation into her for allegedly “creating divisions” between the people and the Pakistan Armed Forces and summoned Alema at 11am local time on February 6.

A notification issued by Assistant Director of Investigations Ejaz Ahmed Sheikh said an FIA official had launched an investigation against Alima at the request of the home ministry.

The notice said Aleema was accused of “creating division between the people and the army through criminal conspiracy and anti-national rhetoric” and must appear before the FIA headquarters in Islamabad, The Express Tribune reported on Saturday.

The notice was issued under Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Pakistan (CrPC) and mentioned that Aleema must ensure her attendance at the investigation, failing which legal action will be taken.

Alimah was notified at her residence in Lahore.

Imran’s sister has also not received a summons from the FIA’s cyber crime unit for allegedly spreading “fear and panic” in society.

A notice issued in this regard directed Aleema to appear at the FIA Cybercrime Reporting Center at 11 am on Saturday for clarification.

Earlier, the FIA also summoned 65 people, including a number of journalists and social media activists, for allegedly carrying out malicious activities against judges and institutions, the Tribune reported.

According to details, the FIA has “fully mobilized against negative campaigns on social media containing insulting and misinformation targeting the Chief Justice, senior judges and state institutions”.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, who was ousted following a no-confidence motion in April 2022 and is currently incarcerated in Adiala jail, is facing a series of legal troubles.

Pakistan’s Accountability Court (AC) sentenced Imran Khan and his wife to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana case.

The trial court also sentenced former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years each in the “Un-Islamic Nika” case.

Earlier on January 30, a special court established under the Official Secrets Act sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to ten years in prison in the password case.

Prospects for the PTI polls scheduled for February 8 were further weakened after Pakistan’s Supreme Court in January upheld the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan to remove the “bat” symbol of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
