Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron has urged Israel to open one of its ports to allow aid arriving by sea to reach Gaza.
He also called for more visas to be issued to United Nations staff to ensure humanitarian aid can be distributed in the Palestinian territories.

Speaking in the House of Lords, Lord Cameron said: “We are doing everything we can to increase aid to Gaza.
“We have been working with Jordan on humanitarian aid airdrops and are now working with partners to implement them Maritime aid corridor from Cyprus.
“However, this cannot replace land delivery, which remains the best way to get assistance on the scale needed.”
“Israel must lift restrictions on aid and restore electricity, water and telecommunications,” he added.
Lord Cameron Continuing: “If Israel really wanted to help, they could open the port of Ashdod in Israel, which is a fully functional port, which would indeed maximize the direct delivery of aid from Cyprus to Israel and thus to Gaza.”
Regarding the distribution of aid in Gaza, he added: “This is one of the trickiest pieces of the puzzle – one of the things Israel needs to do is issue more visas to UN staff who have the capacity to distribute aid when it arrives in Gaza” .

The Tory peer said some of the blockage of aid to Gaza was Israel’s fault.
The foreign secretary said: “Providing more aid to Gaza will require more than just Israeli efforts to take relevant measures, but I think Israel is the country that can make the biggest difference because some of the blockade and screening issues and all the rest are theirs responsibility.”
He highlighted the example of 18 trucks from Jordan being held at a border crossing for 18 days.

Regarding Israel’s legal position, Lord Cameron said: “Indeed, Israel’s performance as an occupying power in allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza… is an important consideration when considering how they comply with international humanitarian law. “
