An indigenous fighter jet Tejas crashed near a hotel in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan today. This is the first crash of a domestically produced fighter jet in 23 years since its first test flight in 2001.

Tejas is a single-seat fighter jet, and the Air Force also has a two-seat trainer model. The Indian Navy also operates a two-seater version. The first test flight of the Technology Demonstrator-1 (TD-1) was conducted in 2001 and the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configured Series 2 Production (SP2) Tejas aircraft made its first flight on March 22, 2016.
The Tejas light fighter is a 4.5th generation multi-role fighter designed to undertake offensive air support and provide close combat support for ground operations.
Tejas is the smallest and lightest aircraft in its class, its size and extensive use of composite construction making it even lighter. In 2016, the first Indian Air Force squadron to induct Tejas fighter jets was the 45th Squadron, the “House of Flying Daggers”.
The Indian Air Force currently has 40 Tejas MK-1 aircraft and the Indian Air Force has ordered 83 Tejas MK-1A fighter jets in a deal worth Rs 36,468 crore.
The Indian Air Force plans to replace its aging MiG-21 aircraft with LCA Tejas Mark 1A aircraft by 2025. The LCA program was conceived in the late 1980s to replace the MiG-21 which had been in service with the Air Force since 1963. It was renamed “Tejas” in 2003.
