In a recent public speech, actor Kangana Ranaut claims she received The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to contest the elections from Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh due to the Women’s Reservation Bill.

In a recent public address at Mandi Balkh village, Ranaut spoke about how she got the BJP ticket for the Women’s Reservation Bill. “The Women’s Reservation Bill gives 30 per cent reservation to women (in Lok Sabha) and that is why I am on this stage today. It is because of this that your daughter from Mandi has this stage.”

BOOM found these claims to be untrue and the Women’s Reservation Bill has not yet been implemented and will not be implemented until at least 2029. The Women’s Reservation Bill, also known as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, seeks to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and legislative state women’s assemblies.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on September 20, 2023, 27 years after it was first introduced in Parliament. On September 22, the Federal Council also unanimously passed the bill. The bill has passed both houses of parliament and now requires the president’s approval, which he received on September 28.

This means the bill meets all requirements to become law. However, the bill will not come into force until the census and delimitation work is completed. The delimitation exercise involves allocating the number of seats and boundaries of constituencies across the country for Lok Sabha and state elections. This work will be based on censuses released after 2026. The center has not yet completed the 2021 census due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This essentially means that the bill will come into effect after the delimitation exercise, which will begin after the latest census is released. On September 20, 2023, Home Minister Amit Shah, while addressing the Lok Sabha, said that the delimitation process will be carried out after the 2024 general elections, while the Women’s Reservation Bill will not be implemented until at least 2029. Several opposition leaders at the time criticized this method used to implement the women’s reservation bill.

AAP leader Atishi said, “Why include provisions for delimitation and census? This means women’s reservation will not be implemented before the Lok Sabha polls in 2024. We demand that provisions for delimitation and census be scrapped and women’s reservation will be Implemented in 2024 Lok Sabha polls.”

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Kanimozhi has said reservation can be easily extended till the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. “Stop this symbolism. This bill is called Nari Shakti Vandhan Bill.
