A former executive in China has been sentenced to death for murdering the founder of a well-known gaming company in 2020, Chinese media reported.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court said Xu Yao poisoned company founder Lin Qi’s food in December 2020 over a professional dispute, CBS News reported.
The company – Youzu Networks – owns the film rights to the Chinese science fiction trilogy “The Three-Body Problem”.
Yoozoo Networks granted Netflix the rights to produce an adaptation of the trilogy in 2020. Lin has been named an executive producer on the series, which is produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
The company also develops games based on the TV series Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming.
The court said in a statement that between September and December 2020, Xu poisoned drinks in the office due to a dispute with two of them, causing four other people to become seriously ill, but none of them died.
Chinese financial publication Caixin had earlier reported that Lin was injected with a mixture of up to five different poisons.
Xu Yao set up his own laboratory in Shanghai to test the poisons to ensure they were effective against Li, Caixin reported.
Lin’s condition was reportedly stable initially, but he died nine days later despite receiving a 40-liter blood transfusion. The death of the 39-year-old oil man shocked China’s technology and gaming circles.
Officials said professional jealousy was the main reason behind the gruesome murder.
