'Election Mitra': Andaman police develop chatbot for effective policing during polling

Two young police officers stationed in a remote area of ​​the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) have brought pride to the entire Union Territory Police Department with their in-house chatbot called ‘Election Mitra’.

Developed by North and Central Andaman SP Geetanjali Khandelwal (IPS) and Rangat SDPO Rahul L Nair (IPS), ‘Election Mitra’ was trained on all Election Commission of India (ECI) manuals on police roles and responsibilities.

An official said it provides prompt and accurate responses to user inquiries by citing authentic sources.

The official added that this initiative highlights the importance attached by Superintendent of Police Devesh Chandra Srivastva to the development and utilization of state-of-the-art technology in day-to-day policing.

Geetanjali Khandelwal, a former Army Captain and IPS officer of AGMUT cadre 2015, is not only an excellent team leader in catching poachers in deep jungles and mid-sea but is also known for her involvement in various social activities.

These include free tutoring for school students, self-defence training for girls and self-sustainability workshops for rural women.

Rahul L Nair (AGMUT cadre 2021), currently serving as SDPO of Rangat, North and Central Andaman, was also part of Geetanjali Khandelwal’s team and played a key role in the creation of ‘Election Mitra’.

Devesh Srivastva said, “This chatbot was born out of limited resources and extensive discussions with various stakeholders involved in the election process. There is a need to ensure that all police personnel, right down to the last man, are always ready to User-friendly and interactive way to access authentic information published by ECI.” By scanning the QR code of all rank-and-file personnel of the Andaman and Nicobar Police Stations and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in the archipelago for election duty, one can Easy access to “Election Mitra”.

Apart from the chatbot, another technological initiative has been launched – geo-tagging and color-coding the location of all polling stations, vulnerable areas, habitual offenders and history sheets, among other useful/relevant information.

“These geo-tagged maps are available on the Google Maps platform and are made available to all field police and CAPF on election duty by scanning the QR code. The launch of these initiatives highlights the strong commitment of the Andaman and Nicobar Police to embrace innovation .and leverage technology to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in the archipelago,” the DGP added.
