Egypt's Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sworn in for third term today

According to reports, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi “will be sworn in in accordance with the constitution on Tuesday.

Cairo:

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will be sworn in for a third consecutive term on Tuesday in the new capital under construction outside Cairo, government newspaper Al-Ahram confirmed on Monday.

Al-Ahram newspaper said Sisi, who has been in power for more than a decade, “will be sworn in in accordance with the constitution on Tuesday in the new parliament building in the administrative capital east of Cairo.”

According to official sources, 69-year-old Sisi will begin his term on Wednesday, more than three months after he was re-elected with 89.6% of the vote, defeating three little-known candidates.

Former army chief and defense minister Sisi led the ouster of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi after massive popular protests across the country.

Under the Constitution, his new six-year term is supposed to be his last.

Mustafa Bakri, a member of parliament close to the ruling power, said the government may resign after Sisi takes office to allow for a cabinet reshuffle.

The swearing-in comes against the backdrop of a severe economic crisis, with rising inflation and foreign exchange shortages curbing foreign trade.

However, in the first three months of 2024, Egypt benefited from an influx of billions of dollars, including $35 billion from the UAE, an increase of $5 billion from the original $3 billion IMF loan.

Sisi’s supporters say foreign exchange flows will revive the economy, but observers doubt there will be any improvement without structural reforms to reduce the military and government’s outsized role in the economy.
