East Ayrshire man jailed for six months after dog abandoned in cage had to be euthanized

A man who left his dog abandoned in a cage for days with “out of reach of food and no water” has been jailed for six months after his dog had to be euthanized.

The Scottish RSPCA found the animal lying in a container with a blanket soaked in urine and covered in faeces.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said the dog was “so weak that he could not even hold his head up” and had to be euthanized immediately due to “extreme pain”.

Owner Daryl Torrance, 34, from Mocklyn, East Ayrshire, was also banned from owning or keeping pets for 10 years after admitting a charge of animal neglect.

Torrens was sentenced at Ayrshire Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in October 2022.

The court heard how the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was alerted due to concerns that a dog had been left at the flat for an extended period of time and was believed to be locked in a back room of the flat.

COPFS means animal welfare Police forced entry into the vacant home and encountered an “overwhelming odor of ammonia in the stairwell.”

The male brindle and white hybrid was found in a bedroom in a “thin and weak condition.”

COPFS said there was an untouched bowl of dog food in the other corner of the cage “out of his reach and without water”.

Alistair Duncan, assistant prosecutor fiscal for North Strathclyde, said: “This is a shocking example. animal cruel.

“This poor dog had been abandoned for a long time and suffered horrific consequences as a result of Daryl Torrance’s shocking neglect.

“The law protects animals from harm and COPFS will continue to work vigorously to ensure anyone who breaks the law faces prosecution.”
