Delhi-NCR: Two men strangled housemate for refusing to fill water bucket on ‘apni turn’

A man was allegedly strangled to death by two members of his family following a fight over “his turn” to fill a water bucket. Police said one of the accused, a juvenile, tried to evade arrest by faking it as suicide and was caught in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh.

“On January 11, a PCR call was received at Nihal Vihar police station about a case of suicide in a rented house. Our team reached the spot and found a body lying on a bed in a room on the first floor,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram. The officer further said that as per the statement of the caller, initially the case appeared to be a suicide.

The police refused to carry out the hanging because the ceiling was too high and there was no way to reach it. “Our staff suspected that the case might not be a case of suicide. The dead body was inspected. The team also discussed the matter with the doctors who conducted the autopsy,” the DCP said.

“The doctors told the team that there were some marks present on the neck of the deceased, who was identified as Rachit, a laborer by profession. She was strangulated to death,” Chiram said.

Police said the FIR was registered on January 16 under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 34 (common intention). “We learned that the victim was living with two other people in a rented house. When we inquired about them, the mobile phones of the employees were found switched off. The team found them in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh and a raid was conducted there,” the officer said.

A juvenile was apprehended and another accused identified as Abhay Kant Mishra (27). During interrogation, the accused told the police that they had an argument with the victim after he refused to bring a bucket of water during “his turn”.

“They were drunk. They strangled him to death with a rope and fled the spot,” the DCP said, adding that a rope and a knife were recovered from the possession of the accused.
